What it takes to be a Professional Pet Groomer

A Pet Groomer must have a genuine love for animals especially for dog and cats. Another pre-requisite calls for steady eye/ hand coordination for safe operation of sharp instruments which is essentail for pet grooming. Most if not all groomers embark on this fulfilling career not for monetary gains but because of their passion to care for our furry friends aesthetically. If you possess these qualities and willingly embrace the ethics below, then you've a wonderful opportunity to achieve a life changing career as a Professional Pet Groomer

Ethics

  1. Train to be a qualified groomer and advance yourself with continuing education

  2. Strive to provide humane, high quality compassionate grooming services

  3. Be professional and accept responsibilities when grooming pets

  4. Offer goodwill, integrity to both your customers and peers in the pet grooming industry

  5. Maintain a high standard of hygiene in your workplace

  6. Practice fair pricing of grooming fees for both yourself and your clients without prejudice

  7. Conduct business legally and adhere to rules and regulations set forth by the relevant authorities

Groomers bear great resposibilities for all pet/s placed in their care. The duration of responsibility spans from the time of  collection to discharge of the pet. This can vary between 3-5 hours depending on the arrangement with the client and/ or the salon work load. It is prudent and surely safer to limit the amount of time that a pet remains in your care. This is especially so for animals with health conditions or special care needs.

There is a high possibility that pets may sustain minor injuries while being groom because sharp instruments are used frequently. We are human and surely not perfect. However, cuts and abrasions can be minimized with careful and gentle grooming. However if injuries/ accidents do result, then the best policy is honesty. Groomers should accept responsibility with integrity and professionalism. The health and well-being of the animal is paramount. Spare no efforts to mitigate any suffering. Denying the fact is the worst action to take and may lead to adverse complication for yourself and the pet’s well-being!

Operate on a zero tolerance against harsh treatment/ negligence on pets that can lead to injuries in the grooming premise. Be constantly vigilant for the safety of pets at all times.  Some groomers may unwittingly craft an indemnity that absolves him/her from the owner’s prosecution/ compensation costs if the unthinkable happens. However, it is self-defeating.  It surely does not say much about your level of confidence or competence. In addition, it does not absolve the groomer from scrutiny by animal welfare laws upheld by the relevant authorities. Even established groomers of good repute can lose their hard earned reputation very quickly by causing a serious injury from neglect or unethical conduct. Adhere to safe and professional grooming practices and acknowledge your accountability for the well- being of all pets placed in your care
